A Little About Outpatient Procedures

What is an outpatient procedure?

It is a procedure that does not require an overnight hospital stay. It is often referred to as: ambulatory or same-day procedure.

Outpatient procedures are recommended when the patient has passed certain medical screening tests, and is in good health. The care needed for recovery can be provided at home.

As an outpatient, you're able to recuperate where you're most comfortable - in your own home.

There are many advantages to having your procedure done as an outpatient:

1. Short recovery time

2. Less emotional strain

3. Pleasant atmosphere

4. Convenience

5. High quality care

6. Lower costs

7. Most insurance companies will reimburse at a higher percentage for lower outpatient facility fees.

Medical Records and Confidentiality

All of your medical records are entirely confidential. We will not release your records or any portion of them until you give us written authorization to do so.

Estimated Expenses

Prior to a procedure being performed, you need to speak with our admitting clerk. An estimated charge will be quoted for your procedure. This information may be obtained by calling the admitting office at (228) 864-0008. This estimated charge includes: the evaluation before the procedure, laboratory work, operating room and all drugs given while in the facility. A report concerning your procedure will be sent to your physician. This charge does not include the physician's fee, anesthesiologists fee, nor does it include the fees of pathologists examination of surgical tissue.

Insurance Coverage

As a service to our patients, our office will submit charges for services to commercial group insurance, Champus and Medicare.

Our insurance department will verify your coverage with your insurance company. This verification will:

1. Give us a basic idea of what percentage your insurance company will pay of your estimated procedure and anesthesia fee.

2. If a second-opinion is required.

3. If a deductible or co-insurance amount will need to be collected from you.

4. Please remember this verification of coverage is only an estimate of reimbursement. This is not a guarantee of payment.

Our insurance department will complete any necessary insurance forms at no charge to help collect from your insurance company; however, we do consider you primarily responsible for your account. When payment of insurance claims is assigned to Gulf South Surgery Center, L.L.C., your deductible/coinsurance amount is due at the time of service.

Financial Arrangements

To maintain a high quality of staff and service we depend upon your prompt payment. Though we are not set up to make long-term financial arrangements, we can offer you an extended payment plan. Also, for your convenience, we accept Visa and MasterCard. Cosmetic patients may pay by cash, cashier's check, Visa or MasterCard. Also, any lab work needed is an additional fee.

Anesthesia

Patients are admitted to the Gulf South Surgery Center, L.L.C. at the request of their attending physician, who will perform their procedure. He may choose to do the operation under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. Anesthesia will be handled by Gulfport Anesthesia Services. This is a group of local anesthesiologists who employ Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists.

The anesthesia will be administered by these Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists who are supervised by the anesthesiologists.

After Surgery

After the surgical procedure is completed, if a general anesthetic was administered, you will be taken to the Recovery Room to recover from the effects of the anesthesia. Following recovery, you will be returned to your patient room.

You will remain in your room until it is deemed that you are able to return home safely. A maximum of one (1) relative or friend may wait with you. Others may wait in the front Lobby.

DO NOT PLAN on returning home unattended. You must be accompanied by a responsible adult - either a relative or friend.

If after a period of observation your physician decides that you are not able to safety return home, he will admit you to a hospital. Upon being discharged, you will be given instructions for post-operative care that your physician has left for you in addition to "Discharge Instructions" from Gulf South Surgery Center, L.L.C.
